Sentiments and Values

The perspective of a teenage boy in ups, downs and the grays between.

"I would there were no age between ten and three-and-twenty, or that youth would sleep out the rest; for there is nothing in the between but getting wenches with child, wronging the anciently, stealing, fighting." - William Shakespeare

Map the Soul

Epik High introduced a new album last week: Map the Soul.

When you buy it, it also comes with a book that Tablo (lead rapper) personally wrote. I can't wait to get my copy.

In fact, I was so elated that I took nearly two hours to write this short message to the members of Epik High a few days back:

Hello Epik High!

A friend of mine introduced me to your music two years ago - she played "Fan" from your fourth album. It was a realm of music that I had never heard. I did not know how to label it under any category of music I recognized at the time, but it was everything that I could ever want in music - addicting melodies and even better lyrics.

The mixing is spectacular - your songs have all the right sounds at all the right places to induce, within the listener, a plethora of emotions. As I listen to your songs over and over again, I keep noticing an instrument and/or sound that I had not noticed there before. The sheer complexity of your music coupled with brilliant mixing makes Epik High a real winner. Taking out my MP3 player to listen to your music makes me bathe in anticipation of the emotional and surprisingly philosophical roller coaster ride that I know and respect as Epik High.

Furthermore, the lyrics are powerful, intelligent, and unique. I would do your words injustice by calling them poetry. It is so much more than the wad of cusses and "bling" that rappers spit at people. You bring the phonetics of words together with their literal and connotative meanings with such unity and accord that when I listen to your music, I often find my mouth gaping wide open in wonder. As a result you inspire me to try and write my own rhymes from time to time - it is incomparable to your genius, but it makes me try harder and harder each time.

My favorite songs include 낙화, Butterfly Effect, 혼, 실어증, Be, 선곡표, and Let it Rain.
Your most promoted songs such as Love Love Love, Fan, Fly, One, etc. are also phenomenal, but I think that your message in its elemental form comes from the songs in which lyrics are not sacrificed for aural bliss.

Above all, I just want to say that I cannot find a substitute for your music anywhere else in the world. Your music has changed my view on music and my ideals withal.

Cheers,
Eric Sangjae Choi

I just hope that they get to read it sometime soon - their official forum is literally covered with fan messages from all over the world - I connected with some girl from Nice, France and also with some kid from Sydney, Australia.

Epik High fans out there, get this album!!
(buy it, don't illegally download plz ^_^)

If you aren't a fan of Epik High, then listen to them and try to find out for yourself why they are one of the most popular groups in the Kpop industry.

Illiteracy in Canada

Although 99% of our population can read and write, a better question to ask would be "how many of those people can read and write well enough to cope in society?"

A recent report published by the Canadian Council on Learning attests to the fact that 1 in 5 university graduates have difficulty reading and writing. They were ranked below level 3 which means that they have difficulty in understanding even the simplest of text.

And the rate of illiteracy is expected to rise.

The CCL's report predicts that by 2031, 1 in 4 university graduates will be illiterate below level 3. What's even worse is that in non-university graduates, the current rate is 38% and the projection for 2031 is 45%. This means that 1 in 2 will be unable to read and write at a sufficient level.

This kind of trend poses an even darker threat to our economy than the current recession. Without skilled people, we have no skilled jobs, we have decreased production, rising prices of goods, inefficiency of business, and just total chaos.

These bad omens extend before and beyond post-secondary education: 40% of our high school graduates "have insufficient reading skills... five in 10 adults, and six in 10 immigrants also have insufficient literacy skills."

For now, the Ontario Ministry of Education suggests that parents read to their children before they even hit kindergarten. It's truly embarrassing - how can Canada compete in the world when half of our people have insufficient literacy skills?

Israel-Palestine Conflict World Issues Project

Here's a double dose of S&V for you guys today!!

I made this video for a world issues project

I've been reading a lot of middle-eastern conflict news and the one that strikes me as the most significant in terms of duration is the Israel-Palestine conflict.

I'm not taking any sides here, as I think that both sides have a legitimate claim over the Holy Land.

I just wish there was less bloodshed on both sides, and especially for the Palestinian people - in all the photos I've found on the net, nearly all the soldiers with good equipment and guns were Israeli forces. On the other hand, the abused Palestinians are usually women and children. The men are fighting by throwing stones at the Israeli forces.

Let's pray that these two peoples find a way to resolve their differences soon.

USSR Anthem

Hi peeps!!

It's been a long time since I last posted - I'm sorry, I was very busy due to a Law Test - I took it today, and all I can say is that I regret studying so much for it.

What a win/lose situation - the test was thankfully but simultaneously frustratingly easier than I expected.

Anyhow I was randomly listening to a bunch of national anthems from around the world on youtube and I found this one, which I think is most patriotic that I've heard so far - too bad the United Soviet Socialist Republic (CCCP) is not around anymore.

Check it out:
